Ask people why they chose to have their air conditioner replaced, and many will tell you that they took this step in an effort to save on energy. It is true that new air conditioners are far more energy-efficient than older ones, and that replacing your air conditioner can help you save a bundle on energy. This can be a good enough reason to get a new air conditioner. But energy savings are not the only benefit you'll enjoy once your new AC is in place. Here are some others.
More Eco-Friendly Refrigerant
For decades, air conditioners were made to work with a refrigerant called R-22. This refrigerant did a good job of cooling, but it was also found to have adverse effects on the environment. More specifically, it was a greenhouse gas. Now, air conditioner manufacturers use a different refrigerant in their units. Called R-410a, this refrigerant is much better for the planet. If you upgrade your AC unit to a new one that runs R-410a, you can rest assured that you've made a wise choice for the planet. If you ever have a refrigerant leak in your new AC unit, you know the leak won't be as detrimental. (Although it will still be something to have fixed ASAP.)
Quieter Operation
In the middle of the night when your air conditioner kicks on, does the noise it makes wake you up or disturb you? Young kids might be especially susceptible to this noise, and when they wake up, so do you. A new air conditioner is likely to operate more quietly. Some are so quiet you can barely hear them, especially if your AC contractor is careful not to install the unit too close to a window or vent.
Less Humidity
Air conditioners work, in part, by removing humidity from your indoor air. When the air is less humid, it feels cooler. Your new air conditioner is likely more effective at removing humidity from the air than the older model. So, you may be able to turn the thermostat up a degree or two and feel just as cool. You may also have fewer issues with warped wood, mold, and other humidity-related problems in the home.
Upgrading to a new air conditioner can be a very wise move. Not only will you save energy, but you'll be supporting a new and eco-friendly refrigerant and enjoying a quieter, less humid home.
