As you start your spring cleaning, don't forget to add your HVAC system to your spring cleaning list. Spring is a great time to clean your HVAC system and perform routine maintenance as you switch from using it for heating to using it for cooling needs. Here are a few things that you need to do to clean your HVAC unit and get it ready for summertime.

Clean or Change Your Filters

The first thing you need to do is clean or change out your air filters. Heavy use during the wintertime can clog up your filter with dirt and debris. Before you start pumping cold air through your HVAC system, you need to clean or change out your filter.

Some filters can be taken out, washed and replaced. If you have this type of filter, it should indicate that it is washable somewhere on the frame of the filter. Otherwise, you should replace your filter with a new one. When you replace your filter, pay attention to how long it says it should last on the box; mark that date on your calendar. For example, if the filter is supposed to be effective for three months and you install the new filter on April 1st, then July 1st should be marked on your calendar so you remember to replace the filter.

If anyone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma, you may want to consider upgrading to a HEPA filter. HEPA filters are designed to filter out even smaller particles than most traditional filters; this can make your home a more breathable place for anyone who has allergies or asthma.

Clean the Drainage Hole

Many HVAC systems have a drainage hole that is located at the base of the unit. It is generally found behind the evaporator fins. You can find the exact location of your unit's drainage hole by consulting your owner's manual.

Use a wire or straightened out paper clip to remove any dust or debris that has built up in this hole. Also, make sure that it is clear and open.

Wipe Down the Outside of Your Unit

You should also dust the outside of your HVAC system. Over time, dust can build up on the outside of your unit. Eventually, that built up dust can make its way inside of your unit and potentially damage components.

Clear the Area Around Your Unit

You should also make sure that you are not storing a bunch of items right next to your HVAC unit. If a lot of clutter has built-up around your HVAC unit, work on removing the clutter and finding another home for it this spring.

Wipe Down Your Vents

Finally, vacuum the outside of all of your vents and use cleaning wipes to remove any dust that remains behind. If possible, remove your vent covers and wipe down the inside of them as well. You don't want the air in your HVAC system, after being filtered, to have to be pushed through dirty vent covers.

Make sure you spend a little time cleaning your HVAC system and preparing it for its transition from heating to cooling duties. Additionally, you should put in a call to a local HVAC repair company, such as Christian Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., and have them come out and inspect your unit. This is a great way to spot and stop small issues before they turn into big repairs.
